MY MANTRA
Travel for yourself, not others. Enjoy the destination and the journey. Embrace new experiences. Seek out hidden gems and authentic people. Be present. Soak up the sunshine. Read something new and take road trips often. Make memories you’ll treasure. Find magic in the everyday.
MY STORY
Having grown up in Rhode Island —the smallest state in the US — I’ve wanted to explore spunky city centers, breathtaking sceneries, and colorful buildings for as long as I can remember. My teenage years were strongly characterized by the itch to experience life outside of my bubble and even influenced my decision to attend a huge university for undergrad. But that itch began much earlier when as a kid, my sister, mother, and I would travel halfway across the world every other year to visit my mother’s family in Hong Kong. I loved being immersed in a different culture, learning about traditions and history, and seeing the bustling city life. And I was eager for more.
My appreciation for new and different experiences grew during my semester abroad in London. Being an exchange student in a foreign country where I knew no one was seriously outside my comfort zone, and it challenged me to better know and love myself. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I was forced — for the first time in my life, really — to learn to embrace adventure, spontaneity, and being alone with myself.
Engaging deeply with people and communities around the world was truly an experience larger than myself. By giving me a way to authentically connect with others and find perspective, travel helped anchor me in a world that often felt unkind and superficial. This way of experiencing the world and searching for my unique place in it became especially meaningful when at age of 24, I learned that I was neuro-divergent.
Instead of feeling lost, I remembered what sparked my love of travel in the first place: the grounding belief that diversity is something to be celebrated. I remembered the hardships that vibrant communities have overcome and how our roots fuel our path forward. And I remembered what the wild adventures and beautiful destinations I’ve experienced have taught me: you can always find magic in the world, whoever and wherever you are.
