Camels At Cape Spartel
Riding a camel with friends by the Cape Spartel, Morocco was an experience unlike no other! Cape Spartel is located about 9 miles west of Tangier. We pulled up to the stop (right near the Caves of Hercules, which we visited after - scroll down for pictures) where the camels were already waiting for us. 5 people at a time rode the camels while the rest of us hung out with the baby camels on the side.
Despite the fact that I couldn't tell whether making noises and nipping at your hair means they like or hate you, being surrounded by camels on a different continent was surreal! And the actual camel ride itself was interesting: a lot bumpier and more of a leg work out than I expected! I tried taking a video with my GoPro of it but let's just say it didn't come out great. But it's all about living in the moment, right? So at least I will have that memory to take with me always.
We then checked out The Caves of Hercules, which were so beautiful. There is a grotto inside, with an opening facing the sea, which is known as "The Map of Africa" for it's believed that Phoenicians created the opening in the shape of Africa as it's seen by the sea. The actual cave is both natural and man-made; Berber people used the man-made part to cut stone wheels from the walls in order to make millstones, which made the cave much larger. Outside the grotto lies a beach with a mountain in the background. The colors of the water and the sky mixed like cotton candy and despite growing up by the beach in Rhode Island, I've never seen anything like it.
